Random Places I Would Like To Visit One Day

Today I had a great idea to keep track of all the cool, crazy, random places I would like to go see one day… I am sure this will grow to a massive list over time!

Ohio State Reformatory (where The Shawshank Redemption was filmed) : http://www.mrps.org/ “The cornerstone laid on November 4, 1886 evolved into this magnificent Chateauesque structure. Cleveland architect Levi T. Scofield designed the Ohio State Reformatory using a combination of three architectural styles; Victorian Gothic, Richardsonian Romanesque and Queen Anne. This was done to encourage inmates back to a “rebirth” of their spiritual lives. The architecture itself inspired them to turn away from their sinful lifestyle, and toward repentance. This grand structure is comprised of more than 250,000 square feet and houses the world’s largest free-standing steel cell block.”

San Jose, California Winchester Mystery House: http://www.winchestermysteryhouse.com/  “Winchester Mystery House™ is an extravagant maze of Victorian craftsmanship – marvelous, baffling, and eerily eccentric, to say the least. Tour guides must warn people not to stray from the group or they could be lost for hours! Countless questions come to mind as you wander through the mansion – such as, what was Mrs. Winchester thinking when she had a staircase built that descends seven steps and then rises eleven?’”

Vegas and Rachel

We decided to take a random trip to Rachel near Area 51 and go to the Little A’Le’Inn cafe that we saw once on TV… and while out there, why not hang out in Vegas too, right? Usually we would gamble and little and watch a show… but I had limited funds and decided go with some shopping for fabrics and to use my student discount for makeup from the Mac Pro store. Oh, and we also stopped by at a costume shop just to see what they had. We might need to go back and buy some stuff before our big iStock Minilypse in July. Overall, it was a pretty fun and random trip… and no, I didn’t see any UFO’S, haha.

The drive to Rachel was long and there was nothing but desert and maybe a few alien signs just before you get to the Extraterrestrial Highway. Area 51 is so far off the road, that you have a to drive a ways out just to get to the signs that say you can’t go any further. We didn’t bother to drive out there… but we did visit a little alien cafe in Rachel. There were a few people there looking at pictures they had taken of what they thought might be UFO’s… I wished our friends Russ and Laurie were there to strike up some interesting conversations, lol. We pretty much just ate our lunches, bought a t-shirt, took some pictures and then headed back to Vegas. I imagine it would be so much fun to visit that place on a night that you know would be super busy with people itching to come tell everyone their abduction stories, lol.

While in Vegas, I thought it would be fun to go check out a local fabric shop, and wow… it was sooo different than what we’ve got here. They have a lot of fun, flashy stuff!! I bought a few yards of some super cool fabric and some fur. Last Christmas, Todd and I were looking for some fur and couldn’t find any of good quality, so now I have some for when I want some. Then we went to Caesar’s Palace Forums Shops where I got to use my MAC Pro discount card… I decided to go with a grey smokey eye pallet. Other than that, we went out to dinner and hung out.

Most importantly, it was good to get out… something we haven’t done for a while. Sitting at home, with a never ending to -do list all winter long as got me in a funk.

Ghost Hunting Weekend at the Stanley Hotel

I found this event while looking at Chip Coffey’s website and thought it would be fun to go to. Todd was going to be in Tokyo and there is no way I would go by myself, so I sent the link to my good friend Russ and told him we should go! He thought it looked like fun, so we made it happen. Neither of us are ghost hunters at all, but Russ is a psychic with medium potential, and I grew up feeling energies, etc. So anyways, this blog post is all about our experience at the TAPS (ghost hunters) event at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado from Nov. 5th-8th 2010.

The Stanley Hotel

The drive from SLC to Estes Park, Colorado was only about 7 to 8 hours. Most of the drive is through a ton of untouched desert with a few cities here and there. We talked about all kinds of stuff, listened to music, and also The Four Agreements by Don Miguel on the way. I think we left at 10am in the morning and got there around 7pmish. Estes Park is a gorgeous little town located up in the mountains. You have to go up a windy canyon road to get there and the scenery is just breathtaking. Fortunately we also had some really great weather pretty much the whole time we were there.

pic of me in room 217

Our cold’s got the best of us the first few days… we were drugged on our cold medicine and slept through the night the first few nights we were there. We did manage to go on a hotel ghost tour (pic to the right), the history is quite interesting… and also the fact that Stephen King stayed in room 217 where he was inspired to write “The Shinning”. We also learned all about all of the ghosts that are still known to haunt the hotel. Our mornings were slow, and we might have missed the first paranormal discussion while eating breakfast, but mostly made it to the rest of them. Some of the topics were Psychology of the Paranormal, Religious Demonology, Nephilim, Spirit Communication, etc. The TAPS team really does have a cool group of people/investigators involved like Adam Blai (a real life Exorcist for the Catholic Church), Jeff Belanger (Author and Legendtripper), Scotty Roberts (Editor of TAPS magazine), and Mike Brody (Comedian) just to name a few. They were all really nice, and definitely

TAPS people

mixed and mingled with the crowd which was really cool. I really wanted some sort of personalized experience from the whole event (not counting on any ghost experiences, lol) so I got a tarot reading from Scotty Roberts. I had a few drinks just beforehand, and can’t remember all of the details, but I do remember him talking about my creativity. Since he is the editor of TAPS magazine, I figured this would be the perfect time to pull out all of my business cards and show him what I do, LOL… Oh, and I told him I would take the best portrait of him that he has ever had, haha.  After that, Russ and I went on to give our version of a ghost tour of the Stanley hotel posted below.

iPhone Movies starring Russ Lyman! Our ghost tour version of the Stanley Hotel…

During one part of the presentation, I could see a huge white glow around Adam Blai… but I am not sure if it was an Aura thing or somehow my eyes were doing something weird. The glow was extremely bright!  I am a huge skeptic of seeing Aura’s, but definitely believe in them. So that was a weird experience.

So the last day we were there, we paid extra to see Chip Coffey… I didn’t really know what to expect. He came in, talked about himself, talked about his show (Psychic Kids) and then opened the floor to questions and then psychic questions. It seems like he was spot on with some people there. It would have been cool to have a personal experience with him, but it was only those few random people out of the crowd that were lucky. One of them was a girl who wanted to desperately find her one and only (this would be husband #4 for her). He said a name that came to him, and she turned to the crowd looking for him, or any guy that might be available, hahaha. Anyways, he ended up telling her to just “shut up!”. I think the crowd clapped… it was funny. Before he started the questions he asked if anyone hadn’t seen a horror movie… ever. One guy raised his hand, and Chip probably embarrassed him pretty badly telling him he’s the only one with a “we we” (or something like that) who has ever said that and he should get his email so he can send it to the seven other women he has ever met that is like that. It was to the point where none of us wanted to turn around and look who the guy was, because we didn’t want to embarrass him even more. I can see how some people would leave feeling pretty offended by Chip Coffey, and glad it wasn’t me. Overall, he was very blunt… and would tell you he could care less if you don’t like it (not very compassionate… at least to this crowd). I thought it was great to watch though, I really find medium capabilities extremely interesting. I would have appreciated a personal experience, but overall, would never pay to go see him again. Afterward, Russ and I got our picture taken with him. We were in a long line and rushed through… so it kind of felt like sitting by Santa Claus  for a picture. I was so weirded out, that I forgot to make eye contact, say hello and thank you.

Later that night, our group was scheduled for a ghost hunt with the TAPS crew. To make a long story short, we ended up sitting in the dark for four hours (rotating rooms every hour) with about 15 strangers asking questions to thin air. And I say thin air because the ghosty’s were definitely avoiding our group for some reason (haha).  I downloaded an iPhone app that is supposedly just another electronic device for a spirit to manipulate called iOVILUS. We only used this in one of the rooms, where one of the many words said happened to be “moist”.. Russ and I could not stop laughing!! hahahaha! If you don’t know us personally, the word moist happens to be one that Russ doesn’t like much, so it was already an inside joke. I actually recorded a bunch of audio trying to get evp’s, but am still trying to find motivation to go back and listen to it. Overall conclusion… I would never be a ghost hunter. I really don’t care to capture any evidence, or sit around dark rooms waiting for it. However, I do love having personal experiences with spirits or energies when they do happen. I would do it again for fun with friends, but not seriously.

Italy Wedding and Honeymoon!! 07-2010

I have been dreaming of coming to Italy for years… and I finally got to do it marrying the love of my life this July. We had a little wedding ceremony (just him and I) on the roof top of a hotel in Varenna, it was extremely romantic. Afterward, we traveled around as much as Italy as we could, ending up in Rome as a final destination before heading home. I could really write a novel about our trip, but I will try to just give the gist of it because it took me all day just to write this much…

The airplane ride there was not bad. It was an overnight trip, so the lights were out and most people were sleeping. I couldn’t sleep of course, so by the time we got there, rented our car and drove to downtown Milano I was super tired and it was super hot. We had lunch where I had my first public restroom experience… haha… I had no idea some public restrooms were just holes in the floor! We took pictures of a beautiful old church, and some guy stuck corn in my hand after we told him.. NO, we dont have any euros to give you. Pigeons flew all over me, and then he gave us this shocking look when we walked away without paying him. Anyways, now I know, the only way to avoid them is to not make eye contact and hide your hands!

We immediately decided to head north towards Veranna and ended up staying in Bellano on Lake Como a few days before the wedding. I really liked it there… it was a cute town, with all older buildings. My favorite breakfast was a yummy pastry with some frozen coffee, mmmmm. It was so good that I had to re-live it the next morning. We were pretty close to Switzerland, so we decided to drive to St Moritz. We stopped at a castle, an old church and some ruins on the way. Of course Todd and I had our cameras with us every step of the way, taking as many photos as possible. St Moritz (touristy ski town located in the Swiss Alps) ended up being quite cold, and ridiculously expensive.

On our way back to Bellano, we stopped in another rad little town where I had the best salad and tortellini Ive ever had in my life. I took lots of pictures of it, but it just doesn’t give it justice, lol.

After Bellano, we checked into our hotel on the side of the mountain in Varrena. We had to take two outdoor elevators to get to our room (pic to the left). We had a beautiful private ceremony on the hotel rooftop at sunset… it was definitely a fairytale wedding to the perfect guy! We took our own wedding photos, then headed out for dinner (restaurants don’t open until 7:30pm, and they expect you to stay all night). We ate on the harbor at a romantic little restaurant with some live music and then headed back to our hotel room to call it a night ;)

We were our own wedding photographers, so Todd and I took turns taking photos of each other (pics below) and then the image at the top was an HDR shot on self timer.

After Varenna, we drove to Bergamo. Each city has a really old part of town with a church in the middle, cobblestone streets, and old buildings & statues, etc. So of course we headed to these parts of each city. Bergamo was really cool… and I loved this little antique store… It was amazing. I didn’t bother to even look at prices, lol. We had an amazing dinner (best lasagna I’ve ever had), and took off to find a hotel at a descent time. Todd hauled ass down the Autostrada, and we found one just before 11pm outside of Brescia. In the morning we drove to the old city. We found an old castle to explore, and a pretty big museum of ancient roman armor. I took a picture of a statue there that I really like… looks like a wounded soldier.

Soon we were on the road again heading to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet! There were shops and tourists everywhere (in all the cities). I bought some cute little souvenirs, we had another fantastic Italian dinner , and we left for Venice!

Since we were on a limited budget, we mostly stayed in hotels on the outskirts of the cities to save money on hotels. We probably spent an average of $100 a night. Although we did run into a few that cost $200 a night. Our hotel outside of Venice was attached to a really great seafood restaurant where we had some fried veggies, shrimp and lobster there, mmmm. There was a ghost in my hotel room, he thought he was a casanova. I felt him touch me twice and both times had to look over at Todd to see if it was him but he was across the room or in one case, fast asleep. I asked the hotel manager about it on our way out, but they guy gave a surprised look… I told Todd, we should have asked a girl because this ghost wasn’t going to hit on any men.

You can’t drive into Venice, so we parked in a garage and walked into town. I was okay for the first few hours, but then the heat hit us hard and it was just too hot to enjoy in my opinion. I left the city with tears running under my sunglasses because every time I walked my thighs would hit each other and sting. Last time I wore a dress or skirt mid-day in Italy! LOL. We got to see the old church, and also took an elevator up the bell tower to see an amazing view. Venice is huge! Full of shops and tourists. I would love to come back some time on off season (if there is such a thing) and nicer weather.

The next day we drove through Bologna, walked around took photos, and had dinner. There were some pretty crazy (naughty) statues there! hehe. Here is a cool creepy fountain statue (on the right). I think we had a gelato (Italian ice cream) every day…  even though we walked around a ton, I didn’t drop a pound, lol. But hey, you can’t go to Italy on a diet, you would have to be crazy… I say, eat as many gelato’s as you want.

Florence was only an hour away. We stayed in a rad little hotel called the Katti house where we could hear the sounds of Italy and a violin echoing down the cobblestone alleyways. I loved it there… Florence is full of art, markets, people and absolutely amazing statues by several famous artists. We visited the Ufizzi Gallery where I saw and loved the Goddess Venus painting.. if you ever go there, make sure to get a free reservation to skip the 2 hour lines!

Here is a shot of the Medusa statue located in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence (below).

Next on our list of cities to see was Siena. We drove through beautiful farm land and sunflower fields all the way there (Tuscany). Sienna was also amazing… but again, way to hot! It was also full of tourists and shops… but I have to say, these shops were  better than a lot of other places. Of course, I made it a point to stop in everywhere we went to pick up little gifts for friends and family. Siena is definitely another place that I would love to go back to and stay in… it would be fun to see their annual horse races.

And who can go to Italy without seeing the leaning tower of Pisa, right? We drove there next, took photos and then headed to Amalfi Coast… the drive there was amazing, and the city of Positano was amazing! The full advantages of this place was a little out of our price range… but wow, we would love to go back and sail around the area. Maybe that’s a new thing on my to do list before I die, lol.

Rome was our final destination, and the most time we had in one place on our trip. Again, we stayed on the outskirts…  in a “4 star” hotel. There was puke stains from our door to the bathroom and paper thin walls, but hey, we saved about $600 staying there so it worked for us! lol. Rome is full of amazing ruins… everywhere… and a lot of it is still being excavated! We saw the Colosseum, Vatican CityThe Sistene Chapel, the Spanish Steps, famous statues, fountains, churches, etc. Todd took a really amazing photo of a tomb located under the Santa Maria in Cosmedin (photo to the right). It was all pretty breathtaking. The last night of our trip we ate at a fantastic restaurant called Hostaria Ancient Roma located in an ancient roman Cemetery. I think that is the most awesome dining experience I have ever had in my life.

So would I go back to Italy? H*CK YES!!! hehehe… next time in the spring or fall though. If it has to be during the summer, I will bring one of those little electric fans that spray water to help stay cool, lol. Anyone going this year, please take one with you and you can thank me later!

Here is an Italy inspired oil painting that I did the first week we got back :)

Seattle 04-2010

We took a trip to Seattle for the last week to visit my brother Eric, his awesome girlfriend Zoey, Adrian and my nieces and nephew . This is the only family I have and feel close to, so it is such a great feeling to go out and visit them. Not only that, but they are just super cool, positive, uplifting, artistic, rad people. We had a great time painting their friend Marta as a jaguar… it took all day to paint the backdrop, and then airbrush and paint her…the shoot turned out awesome! Todd is making another time lapse video for that, so I will post it here as soon as it is done.

^Body painting and backdrop by Me, Todd Keith, Eric Faught and Zoey Luxton. We all painted it together :)

It was so good to see Adrian and his girls too, they are so adorable and have grown so much since the last time I saw them. Adrian was my sister Steena’s husband  (she passed away a few years ago from breast cancer). He is wicked talented in all of his artistic projects. We all got together to sculpt faces out of Apoxie Sculpt (fun stuff!). He also brought over a sculpture that he is already working on… it will be amazing when he is done with it.

Zoey got a letter in the mail of a long, lost story about her family from 100 years ago that was thought to have burned in a house fire. She sat and read it to us, and it was super cool to hear. She has some cool names in her family. I can’t remember them at the moment, but I will ask her and update this post with them.

It was really cool to hear about her grandmother’s child hood and then hear her talk about it…. so that’s why she was blind in one eye… and that’s why she can make the best chicken dumplings, hehe.

I love seeing all the kids play together. They created a cousins club while out there.

So cute. :)

The last day we were there, we visited the Seattle Underground which was really cool. Here are some Hipstamatic (iPhone) pics…

Even though we didn’t grow up together, my brother has been an amazing influence on my life. We had a wonderful time visiting, and hope to get together at least once a year!

My Travels: Disney Land and Death Valley 02-2010

We randomly decided (a day before we left) to take our girls to Disney Land for Valentines this year. My 10 year old actually got teary eyed when we told her, lol. We planned to leave our house around 11am Thurs morning, but didn’t get on the road until about 3pm, haha. My girls could really only stand being in the car 6 hours at a time, so the first stop was Vegas.  And of course, we were woken up before sunrise by a crowd of obnoxious, loud, giggling drunk men gathered right outside our hotel room. Needless to say, we were up and watching cartoons by 6am. Then back on the road to CA, the drive was great, and my girls can handle it well as long as they have movies and games to play on my laptop.

The next day we took our time getting up and getting to the park. It opened at 8am, and I think we go there by 10am… we had to park in overflow. It cost about $280 or so to get all four of us in for one day, that’s crazy (but worth it). I had been to Disney Land before, but couldn’t remember much because I was so little. So the rides we took the girls on are: The Haunted Mansion, the Car Track, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise, Winnie the Pooh, Small World, Finding Nemo, Star Tours, Dumbo, and the Merry Go Round. They were all amazing… but my favorite is definitely the Haunted Mansion. It was so cool :) We also watched the Main Street Parade and fireworks. By the end of the day, I was exhausted and my feet were killing… I didn’t even have enough energy to go sit in the hot tub at the hotel that night, had to wait until the next morning, lol.

We all had a nice swim before we checked out, and decided to drive through Death Valley on the way home. We stopped to stay at the Shoshone Inn just outside of the Park, which was a cool little old western town. Todd had a dream in that Hotel that there was another room attached to our room where a guy kept walking in and out. He said that the man came over to us and smiled while we were sleeping. Todd then went outside and asked the Inn keeper why they rented out a room out of our room and that there was a guy walking in and out… she asked “what guy?” !!! So it was a ghost. I was going to ask the lady who ran the hotel if there were any ghosts, but she wasn’t in the front office as we were leaving. I asked the guy across the street at the restaurant, and he said he heard something about it being haunted.

After a super expensive breakfast (they charge a lot because they can!), we left to drive through Death Valley. None of us have ever been before this trip, so I was super excited. Death Valley gets really hot during the summer, so the winter months are the best time to go. It was still pretty hot during the day, I think it was in the 80′s. Since we only spent one day in the park, we took one road starting at Ashford Mill Ruins, and ended up at the smaller sand dunes on the north side.  For photography, sunrise and sunset are the best times for photos, but we could only choose one place which ended up being the sand dunes.  Todd and I decided we should definitely go back for a photo trip and spend some more time there. My kids had a blast taking pictures, and playing in sand. We have taken them on several road trips to the desert, Moab, Yellowstone, etc. So they are little nature girls and love it.

So after the Sand Dunes, Todd and I decided to straight shoot it home. We left around sunset and got home about 4am. Todd drove of course… I was seeing double just trying to keep my eyes open, lol. That was another fantastic road trip… Next year I am thinking it would be fun to take the girls on a cruise :)

My Travels: Southern California 11-2009

We decided to take a random trip to Southern California with some flight credit that we had. Its funny because the credit ended up costing the same as the flight…. to the dollar! Ultimately I wanted to fly East, but the lower air fare and warm weather was too tempting. Maybe we will be able to visit NY on the way to Italy next year, hehe. We flew on Jet Blue (my first time) and it was fine. Anways, I am familiar with Northern CA, but not really Southern CA… never really been to LA, etc. We started out by driving to Newport Beach, walking around Balboa Island, then Sea World in Sandiego, after that LA, Hollywood and Universal Studios, and last but not least… Venice Beach. And yes, my legs are still sore from walking around, lol.

It was off season for tourists, so Balboa Island was empty. I forgot my sunglasses and picked up a new cheap pair. They were $7,  buy one get one free… but the guy selling insisted that they were $14 for both… I think he really wanted to pocket the extra money and we didn’t really care to argue. Anyways, thats where Todd picked these babies up (pic to the left), hehe.Shortly after we ate at a little 50′s diner at the end of a pier nearby… it was great weather, sunny and nice to be on vacation. While in the Newport Beach area, we bought two post cards in a little shop and mailed them off to my girls at our own address. That was Todd’s idea, he is so thoughtful :)

The next day we went to Sea World in Sandiego… it was cool. I hadn’t been there since I was too little to remember. We watched Shamu (killer whale) and their show which was so amazing! We also watched dolphins getting trained, and in another area people got to lean over some rocks to pet them in a little pool… they liked it when you would splash some water at them and they would try to catch it in their mouth.

We stayed in a cheap hotel in Laguna Niguel and then eventually made it through LA straight to Universal Studios in Hollywood. It was Todd’s birthday, and we ended up eating at a restaurant in the Universal Studios City Walk later that night. Anyways, we got in kinda late and pretty much only caught the Terminator 2 in 3D show… it was super rad, I think I watched the whole thing with my mouth open and smiling (like a little kid). We also took the studio tour which was really cool… we got to see the plane crash set in War of the Worlds, the cabin on The Great Outdoors, the old western sets used in several old western movies, etc. It was great. I think there is a whole lower section to the park that we didn’t really get to see… but that’s okay. Our ticket lasted over the whole weekend, but we ended up walking around Hollywood and then going to Venice Beach the next day rather than going back.

We kept hearing that Venice Beach is just crazy, kind of in it’s own world of freaky people, lol. It kind of reminded me of a stoner heaven… lots of pipe shops, and an 80′s to 90′s grunge style. You had everything from freak shows, to muscle beach people, to guys roller skating & playing the guitar that had been there every day for the past 30 years. We met up with A fellow iStocker (Tom Green) for lunch, he is a cool guy! We hope he will come visit us in SLC some time. Anyways, Todd was taking photos along the beach, and every person there wanted us to give them money for it. The characters walking around Hollywood boulevard were the same way.

On the flight home I was reading a Cosmopolitan Magazine… I had no idea how extreme these fashion magazines had gotten. I’ve never really seen or read a Playboy magazine, but I imagine it to be pretty similar! We got in late, and our car was covered with snow. Here is a shot of Todd scraping the windows.

Anyways, that was our trip! We hope to get out to Italy next year… it was a trip we were thinking about taking this year, but got put off. The truth is, we are saving it for a honeymoon. I can’t wait! I have been dying to travel over seas. :)
