June Photo Shoots

This year has started out slow, but I have been busy this month shooting a ton of stock photography! There is a lot more to come over the next few months as well, especially with our little istock event planned for the end of July. But that is a whole other story, which will come with it’s own blog post.

Here are some pics from some of the shoots I have done this month which are all available in my stock portfolio at the following link: http://www.istockphoto.com/renphoto

Creature Panache Poster Photo Shoot

Rachael Domingo asked us to do a shoot for an upcoming fashion show called Creature Panache, and of course we were all over it! We showed up at the Black Chandelier studio in Salt Lake with all of our gear excited for the awesome opportunity. Here is a behind the scene shot of Rachael Domingo (wardrobe design and body painter) & Chaunsey Hildebrandt (hair stylist), and Deena Marie (model and actress) getting ready for the shoot :

Photo Shoot Collaboration With (the amazing) Rachael Domingo

We recently did a shoot collaboration with the amazing SLC UT artist Rachael Domingo… she did some awesome body painting art, etc.  Not only does she do body painting, she is an amazing fine artist, and designs clothing! I had an idea to put those three types of art (painting, body paint, wardrobe design) together to create a super cool, creative fashion portrait. Her sister Karen did a fantastic job of modeling it and I think it really came out amazing. In post processing, I tried to make it look like she is a part of the painting while painting herself. I love creating illusions in my photography that are fun to look at!

Here is an example of before (straight out of camera) and after editing:

And a close up of the one above, because it is cool :

The same day, we also did another shoot of one of Rachael’s body paint designs. Seriously, so cool!! She calls it “Snow and petals this spring”

And here is a shot the next morning.. hehehe….ah, the life of being an artist. We have to paint over this within the next two weeks (before we move). Smashed princess on wall, LOL

First Shoot of 2011 “Burn Dress” by Pretty Macabre

We got to do another shoot with Andrea Hanson/Pretty Macabre’s wardrobe today! She calls it the “Burn Dress”, which was shown on the runway at An October Evening 2010. Like I mentioned in a previous post, Andrea loves Horror, and we do too… so we had a blast with this shoot. The dress was made with burned edges, and I added a touch of SPFX burn makeup on Laura’s neck and face. Andrea did a fabulous job doing Laura’s hair and makeup… and we had a pretty cool location to work with! I shot a few fun video’s, one of Todd finding and shooting a dead bird… and the other of Todd setting up lights and getting ready to shoot (posted below).

“Gut Dress” by Pretty Macabre 12-2010

*Warning: Images show blood and gore. Guts are made of fabric and is a part of the dress, and the blood is fake.

Andrea Hanson (Pretty Macabre)  is a fantastic wardrobe/costume/fashion designer located in SLC. We had a lot of fun working with her tonight, and hope to do several more exciting shoots… which will probably mostly be horror themed. Erin Chaney Henderson (fabulous makeup artist)  did the beauty makeup and hair. Here are some of the shots….

Article about Todd and I in City Weekly by “Gavin’s Underground”

We are excited, feel honored and thankful to Gavin for publishing an awesome article about us on CityWeekly.net! http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/blog-4463-bellaora-studios.html

My favorite quote from Gavin: “But for some of the most artistic, bizarre and just plain awe inspiring photos around, there’s one company that’s got the edge on everyone else in town.”

I also wanted to add that we are lucky to work with so many awesome models and actors in Salt Lake City!! Thanks so much to all of you!

Photo Editing Tips: Identifying and Fixing “Poor Lighting”

While inspecting images for iStockphoto, I come across several images with “poor lighting”. I would love to bring up some specific examples to explain what is wrong and how to fix it. Histograms can be a helpful clue to exposure and I highly recommend studying them. Here is one tutorial that I found online that you might find interesting: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/histograms1.htm, you can find more by googling “photography histogram tutorial”.

I exaggerated some of the examples, but you will get the basic idea of what I am trying to explain (please click thumbnails to see bigger images).

(Image to the left) First we will take a look at “Flat Dull Lighting”. Just looking at the image, you can see that the brights are not very bright, and the darks are not very dark. The histogram shows that as well. This can be fixed by changing the”levels” using Photoshop and sliding the right arrow slightly to the left, and the left arrow slightly to the right. If you move it too far, you will end up crushing blacks and blowing out the whites.

*Note for beginner photographers: You might have noticed that point and shoot camera’s have a lot of in camera processing and images can come out fantastic on auto settings (in certain lighting situations). Switching over to a manual DSLR camera can be tough at first! You really have to know what you are doing with the settings and that’s when you can get much better photos than a point & shoot. When shooting RAW files, it does not hold any in-camera processing (contrast, etc) so you will need to do it in an editing program. If you shoot JPEG files, you have the option to set in camera processing, stylizing your images, which you may not need to edit as long as you take the photos with the correct exposure.

This next image (to the right) shows just that… Crushed blacks and blown highlights. Notice that the histogram shoots upward off the chart and off the right side of the histogram. This shows that you have lost detail in your highlights and your image is not properly exposed. As far as the black goes, *sometimes* you can get away with crushing your blacks a little… but it can also look good on your computer and bad when printed, so be careful and think of the designers that will be using your images. Afterall, they are your customers as much as the stock agencies.

The image to the left has better exposure, one that I would use. As you can see by just looking at it, it has a pretty good exposure. You can also see that the histogram does not have a perfect mountain shape, which is also fine. I have not lost any detail in highlights or shadows. Again, if the right side of the histogram shot off the top like the last image above, that would be a good indication that I have lost detail in the highlights. I double checked by opening my levels tool and sliding the arrow all the way to the right. Blown out areas will stay completely white.

*Another Tip: Try to NEVER take images with the attitude that you know you are making errors, and that you will just fix it in Photoshop. You will notice a big improvement in your work if you get everything right when you take the image, including lighting, exposure and composition.

Incorrect white balance can be another reason for a “Poor lighting rejection.  Some shoot more on the warmer side, and some are cooler. Sometimes you can do this on purpose making it a part of your style (a rejection would show you are not doing it well). First of all, you absolutely need a calibrated monitor to view the color of your images correctly. If you are getting a ton of white balance rejections, you may be seeing your images completely different than what they really are. If you want to get correct white balance you can buy a gray card at a photography store, and also ask them how you use it because that is a whole different tutorial, lol.

And last but not least, there is using an on-camera flash. I don’t have any examples, but will update this post once I create some.

I hope that you found this tutorial interesting, and would love to hear your comments. The more I hear the more tutorials I will post! Thanks!!

Photography Project for October Evening 2010

Every year we do a little photography project for An October Evening, a fun night of short films, fashion, photography, and performances. For 2008 we did the Death By Series, and 2009, we created the Meet Richard Series. ***Both of those links show blood and gore, viewer discretion advised! *** So this year we have a few different things going on and it is a surprise so I can’t quite show images from it yet… but I can post some BTS shots! Later I will update this post with the finished images.

(Image to the right) Here is my first SPFX makeup zombie gash… learned how to do it off of youtube, haha. It was created with some Liquid Latex, tissue paper, some home made fake blood and of course I did some airbrushing on top of it all.

(Image below) And here is a BTS shot of some zombies… the photo includes my husband, little sister and both my kids, so its kind of a fun family picture!

I am dying to show more… but it will have to wait until after the event on October 22nd!

Here are a few more zombie (portrait shots)…

What is an iStock Minilypse?

I am writing this for anyone who has heard about an iStock “minilypse”, and has no idea what it is…

What is an iStock Minlypse  you ask?! It is an amazingly rad 2-3 day event where 10-30 photographers (from around the world) who are contributors to iStockphoto meet up to do commercial photo shoots of a bunch of models and concepts. The person hosting the minilypse is a contributor themselves that decides to take on the challenge of putting it all together. Tickets to the event are usually low priced and affordable for photographers to keep the opportunity open up to more contributors and because they also need to pay for their own travel costs. The events are meant to share knowledge, create opportunity to shoot new concepts and people, learn, and to be social. We have all seen each others work on the website, and a minilypse is a great way to actually meet other contributors in person. Social parties at a minilypse can range from a simple social dinner to a full blown all nighter of crazy iStocker’s in a bar partying it up all night :) .

Stock photos from the event are usually put in a “light box” or collection of images on iStockphoto.com. For example, this is a light box of an event that Todd and I hosted called the SLC Minylypse 2009. Minlypse events are going on all the time, worldwide… to see if there is one in your area, check the  minilypse forums on iStockphoto. Photographers must be an approved contributor on iStockphoto to attend the events.

iStockphoto also runs events called an iStockalypse. An iStockalypse in an official iStockphoto event rather than a “minilypse” hosted by a contributor. The photo shoots are bigger, better and sell out within minutes of being announced.

Interested in selling stock? Click here! You better watch out though, iStockphoto is pretty addicting, haha.

April 2010 – Stephen Simmons “Are You Interesting?” Photography Project

The purpose of this “Are you Interesting?” project is  to capture photos of  interesting people that I know or come across. Everyone is dressed in their own clothes, in their own locations with their own things. All photos are taken by myself and Todd Keith (my fiance). Let us know if you are enjoying it, we love to hear comments!

April 2010: Stephen Simmons

What can I say? Stephen Simmons is just a really cool guy. And not only is he wicked talented, he is also kind, modest and has awesome energy. He is always laughing and smiling which is nice to be around. So if you know Stephen Simmons, you are lucky to have such a cool person in your life. He is a very talented writer and director (Short Films), plays the guitar and piano, loves vintage and retro, loves old black and white films (silents to talkies) and 80′s horror flicks , manages the Tower Theater, and organizes and runs the event An October Evening in SLC, UT. Todd and I have had the privilege of  showing our work at An October Evening, which has been a really fun project for us for the last two years. One interesting thing about his films, that usually only his close friends would know, is that everything he writes has to do something with his personal life. He is very passionate about his work… and it shows! Stephen says “My ideas and inspiration come from real life experiences(relationships, phobias, work, strangers, acquaintances etc etc)  I always have an actor to play me in some way.  When I act in my films, I always play someone or a character I despise in real life”.
