Creative Photography and Makeup: Green Man

From Wikipedia:  A Green Man is a sculpture, drawing, or other representation of a face surrounded by or made from leaves. Branches or vines may sprout from the nose, mouth, nostrils or other parts of the face and these shoots may bear flowers or fruit. Commonly used as a decorative architectural ornament, Green Men are frequently found on carvings in churches and other buildings (both secular and ecclesiastical). “The Green Man” is also a popular name for English public houses and various interpretations of the name appear on inn signs, which sometimes show a full figure rather than just the head.

The Green Man motif has many variations. Found in many cultures around the world, the Green Man is often related to natural vegetative deities springing up in different cultures throughout the ages. Primarily it is interpreted as a symbol of rebirth, or “renaissance,” representing the cycle of growth each spring. Some speculate that the mythology of the Green Man developed independently in the traditions of separate ancient cultures and evolved into the wide variety of examples found throughout history.

I decided to do  a Green Man shoot with my friend Steve, and it was a ton of fun… love the way it turned out!

*5×7 Greeting Cards  and a few canvas prints of Green Man will be on display at Crones Hollow on 2470 South Main Street in SLC!  http://www.croneshollow.com/. Don’t miss their grand re-opening the weekend of March 3rd!

The first thing I did was create a wig made out of fake leaves. Once he put the wig on, I started gluing leaves to his face.. and then I airbrushed him with greens and blacks. The final touches were made with a paintbrush… blue lips and plant veins on his cheeks. Steve was super fun to work with, and a fantastic model! Here are some BTS shots (below)…

Here is a before editing (straight out of camera) shot and after shot (processed in Lightroom and Photoshop)….

Here are a few more shots from the series:

Photographing Kids Watching Fireworks

We got together with our good friend Becky Rockwood last night to shoot our kids sitting in front of some fireworks. I tried several different settings some with studio lighting and some with natural light and high ISO settings. Here are my results:

(above) Canon 5D Mark II, Settings: 1/125 @ f/4.0,  ISO: 200 -Studio Flash
Lens: EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM

Canon 5D Mark II, Settings: 1.0 sec @ f/7.1, Focal Length 27 mm, ISO 250 -No Flash, Lens: EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM
I think I had my camera sitting on the ground, but may have shaken it a little bit because it is a little blurry… a tripod would have been good :)

Canon 5D Mark II, Settings: 1/80 sec at f/2.8, Focal Length 35mm, ISO: 6400 – No Flash, Lens: EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
100% is downsized and edited :)

Canon 5 D Mark II, Settings: 1/80 sec at f/2.8, ISO 6400, Lens: 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM

With a little downsizing and editing magic, I did get this on iStock: http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=17002305

I will be shooting more fireworks on the 4th of July, so I will post some more shots and settings after that!

Photo Shoot Collaboration With (the amazing) Rachael Domingo

We recently did a shoot collaboration with the amazing SLC UT artist Rachael Domingo… she did some awesome body painting art, etc.  Not only does she do body painting, she is an amazing fine artist, and designs clothing! I had an idea to put those three types of art (painting, body paint, wardrobe design) together to create a super cool, creative fashion portrait. Her sister Karen did a fantastic job of modeling it and I think it really came out amazing. In post processing, I tried to make it look like she is a part of the painting while painting herself. I love creating illusions in my photography that are fun to look at!

Body paint, artist, and wardrobe design: (the amazing!!) Rachael Domingo, Model: Karen Domingo
Concept, Makeup & Photography: Renee Keith 04-02-2011

Here is an example of before (straight out of camera) and after editing:

And a close up of the one above, because it is cool :

The same day, we also did another shoot of one of Rachael’s body paint designs. Seriously, so cool!! She calls it “Snow and petals this spring”

And here is a shot the next morning.. hehehe….ah, the life of being an artist. We have to paint over this within the next two weeks (before we move). Smashed princess on wall, LOL

Article about Todd and I in City Weekly by “Gavin’s Underground”

We are excited, feel honored and thankful to Gavin for publishing an awesome article about us on CityWeekly.net! http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/blog-4463-bellaora-studios.html

My favorite quote from Gavin: “But for some of the most artistic, bizarre and just plain awe inspiring photos around, there’s one company that’s got the edge on everyone else in town.”

I also wanted to add that we are lucky to work with so many awesome models and actors in Salt Lake City!! Thanks so much to all of you!

City Weekly Arty’s Awards 2010 – The Body Illustrated by Todd Keith and Renee Keith

Todd and I were so excited to find out that we won the City Weekly’s Arty’s Awards *Readers Choice* for best photography exhibit in 2010! A huge thanks to everyone who voted for us!  Here is the link where we are listed: http://www.cityweekly.net/utah/article-12171-artys-2010.html?current_page=2

“BEST PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION
The Body Illustrated, Todd Keith & Renee Keith, Utah Arts Alliance Gallery

This recently married duo took on two art forms with their essay of the human body: photography, which they’ve practiced for years, and applying painting their models, which they just recently learned. The results run from trompe-l’œil effects, in which models meld into backgrounds of fauna or wallpaper patterns, to whimsical characters that almost jump right off the emulsion. It’s all created with a spirit of great fun. ArtBodyPaint.com

Project: Are you Interesting? Jan-Dec 2010

The purpose of this project is  to capture photos of  interesting people that I know or come across. Everyone is dressed in their own clothes, in their own locations with their own things. All photos are taken by myself and Todd Keith (my fiance). Let us know if you are enjoying it, we love to hear comments!

This year I will be posting casting calls to find  and do stock photo shoots of people who I find interesting. Some will be of people I already know, and others might be people responding to my casting calls. My goal is to do one-two a month, and  the first one in January is already set! I am looking for more of a personal shoot, and would like to capture models in their own setting and wardrobe. If you are interested in modeling (or would like to nominate someone) for this project please contact rlee [dot] photo [at] gmail [dot] com for more info. I will post images and updates in this thread, so stay tuned :)

UPDATE (07-2010) : Okay, so one a month hasn’t worked out for me this summer because Todd and I were busy with running minilypse’s, and travel. I plan to continue the project in August!
